We motored out of the anchorage at about 8.50am and headed East in the grey dreich (Google it) morning.
We gingerly put up the mainsail and checked the rig, it was indeed showing a lot of play on the leeward side. For non sailors that’s the side of the boat that is down wind from the sail.
Nick managed to raise the riggers in Lymington and they were happy that we could continue to sail and have given us the correct procedure to fix the rig. We will try that tomorrow.
We motored for about half our journey and sailed the other half but not in nice neat proportions. The first leg took a great deal of time as the course we wanted to steer had the wind directly in front of us, requiring us to tack back and forth to get upwind.
There was also a significant current around the major point of Cabo Ortagal. Tacking adds a great deal of distance to the journey. You can see from the approximate track below (without tacking) the journey is just over 30 miles. Our actual mileage was 45 miles. As we also had to deal with the currents our speed was low so the journey time was 8.75 hours.
We are overnight in the pretty anchor spot of Praia De Aera, this looks like a very upmarket location with lots of unusual contemporary houses and no apartment blocks. Must be great when the sun is shining!
