Day 26

We awoke in Corme to a very thick fog that had descended on the town.  It was forecast and it was also forecast to be like this every morning for the next four days.  It was also forecast that it would lift by 9.00 am.  Our departure deadline was really about 1 pm to make it back to A Coruna with a good safety margin before it gets dark.

Around 10.00am it had lifted significantly and we decided to go for it.  By the time we had lifted anchor and started our way out into the bay the fog had come back in.  It was however very patchy and no worse than the day before, so we decided to motor on, literally!

Within the hour we were again joined by a bird, this time a proper racing pigeon.  It circled the yacht and then landed on the rear guardrail.  It was to stay there for a couple of hours.

This bird didn’t look tired nor was it fearful of us, it was also ringed so we are pretty sure it was racing.  Given that we have had 2 birds in consecutive days we are beginning to think the new light at the top of the mast says “Taxi”.

The pigeon had a look at our lunch, Paul offered it some bread but it spotted land in the distance and it was off.  One full circle of the boat to get its bearing and straight off towards land.

The weather continued to improve and by 1pm we were sailing flat out with perfect visibility and a warm sunny day that would sustain for us all the way back to A Coruna.  A warm shower and dinner ashore was very welcome.

That’s us survived the “Costa da Morte”.  The Death Coast.  Both ways………
